UNA Awards for Students

Eligibility

  • To be eligible for a UNA award, applicant must:
    • Have been an active, premium-paying UNA member for at least two years by June 1st of the filing year
    • Have a policy valued at a minimum of $5,000 during the last two years (Term Life policies excluded)
  • UNA awards are granted upon completion of the senior year of high school and during freshman, sophomore, and junior years of college;  graduate students are ineligible to apply
  • Awards are granted for one academic year only; for renewal of an award, a new application and updated documents must be submitted
  • Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Canada
  • Applicant must have a cumulative grade average of at least 2.5;  transcripts of grades from the most recent fall and spring semesters must be submitted with application
  • The application for a UNA award must be completed in its entirety, signed and dated;  it is to be postmarked no later than June 1st and submitted with:
    • Academic grade transcript
    • Photograph of applicant (2 x 2 inches)

Incomplete and/or late entries will automatically be disqualified.

Selection of Award Recipients

  • All applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee and receive an award, in graduated amounts, depending on their years of study;  lowest award amounts will be given to freshmen, while seniors will receive the highest awards
  • Award amounts will depend on the availability of UNA funds in any given year

Payment of Awards

  • UNA  awards are designated for tuition only;  award checks will be issued payable to the college or university and be mailed to the student’s home address, unless other arrangements are made

Community

When you purchase a policy with the UNA, you become a member of an organization that has been committed, since its inception, to giving back to the community.  We support various cultural and educational programs, such as scholarships for deserving student members.  As a fraternal benefit society, our earnings are reinvested for the benefit of our members.

Newspapers

The UNA publishes two newspapers: Svoboda in the Ukrainian language and The Ukrainian Weekly in English.  Both papers have reputations of being top-quality, well-respected news sources about events and happenings in Ukraine and Ukrainian communities throughout the world.  Mail and online subscriptions are available.

Ukrainian National Foundation

The Ukrainian National Foundation, Inc. (UNF), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, is the charitable arm of the UNA. Through the UNF, we provide a multitude of educational and scholarship programs, support youth and senior citizen initiatives, and promote arts and cultural exchanges. The UNF has provided humanitarian aid for catastrophes worldwide and supported such worthwhile projects as the refurbishment of the Statue of Liberty.

Soyuzivka Heritage Center

Nestled in the mountains of beautiful New York state, the Soyuzivka Heritage Center offers visitors a unique experience by immersing them in a Ukrainian environment.

Through workshops, seminars, camps, festivals, art shows, concerts and a host of other activities, you can expand your knowledge of the rich Ukrainian heritage and traditions.  In addition, the Soyuzivka Heritage Center serves as a wonderful gathering place to meet with old friends and form new friendships.

UNA Special Scholarships

Applicants must indicate on their application for which special scholarship they wish to apply.

Joseph and Dora Galandiuk Scholarship

    • One $2,000 scholarship for a student excelling in the sciences or accounting
    • Freshmen, sophmore, and junior year college students are eligible to apply
  • Drs. Maria, Dmytro, and Olha Jarosewycz Scholarship
    • One $1,000 scholarship for a student of Ukrainian heritage, excelling in his/her studies
    • Freshmen, sophmore, and junior year college students are eligible to apply
  • Vera Stangle Scholarship
    • One $750 scholarship for a student of Ukrainian heritage, studying journalism or nature and wildlife
    • Freshmen, sophmore, and junior year college students are eligible to apply
  • Joseph Wolk Scholarship
    • One $750 scholarship for a student of Lemko heritage
    • High school seniors and freshmen, sophmore, and junior year college students are eligible to apply
  • Ukrainian National Home Corp. of Blackstone, Massachusetts, Scholarship
    • Multiple $500 scholarships for students, who are residents of the New England area and members of New England UNA Branches
    • High school seniors and freshmen, sophmore, and junior year college students are eligible to apply
